2008 Emergency First Aid Certification Program

On September 10, 2008 the GLPOA hosted an Emergency First Aid Certification Program at The Sands. There is no doubt the 12 people attending found it to be a very worthwhile session.

The day-long course took a practical approach in coaching non-medical people on how to handle all types of medical emergencies until qualified help arrives. Included was detailed instruction on CPR, first aid priorities for cardiovascular emergencies such as heart attack and stroke, plus treatment for many other types of emergencies including choking, head and spinal injuries, eye injuries, burns, fractures, seizures, cuts, etc.

Throughout the day emphasis was placed on applying the principles of safety when giving first aid. Instruction was also given on understanding the legal implications of performing first aid and emergency scene management. It is the intent of the GLPOA to organize another course early summer 2009. We urge all members who have not had emergency training to give thought to attending. As one of those attending the September 10 session stated, “I’m here because I never want to be caught saying, ‘I don’t know what to do.’”
